  • Résumé : "The Adventures of Prickly Porky" by Thornton W. Burgess is a delightful tale set in the Green Forest and Green Meadows, where a series of curious events unfold, captivating the animal inhabitants. The story begins with Peter Rabbit encountering a mysterious creature without a head, tail, or legs, which sends him into a panic. His tale spreads quickly among the forest creatures, leading to a mix of skepticism and intrigue. Jimmy Skunk, tasked with investigating, finds no evidence of such a creature, while Unc' Billy Possum claims to have seen it himself, adding to the confusion. As the story progresses, Reddy Fox, known for his boastful nature, is challenged to confront the mysterious creature. Despite his bravado, Reddy is terrified when he encounters the rolling, leaf-covered entity and flees, much to the amusement of the other animals. Old Granny Fox, skeptical of the tales, decides to investigate herself. Her encounter with the strange creature results in a similar reaction, causing her to lose her usual composure and run away. The narrative cleverly weaves themes of curiosity, bravery, and the consequences of boasting, as the animals navigate their fears and the unknown. The story is rich with humor and lessons, as the animals learn about the importance of humility and the dangers of jumping to conclusions. Burgess's engaging storytelling and vivid characterizations bring the forest and its inhabitants to life, making "The Adventures of Prickly Porky" a charming and educational read for children and adults alike.
  • Biographie : Born January 17, 1874 in Sandwich, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, Burgess was the son of Caroline F. Haywood and Thornton W. Burgess Sr., a direct descendant of Thomas Burgess, one of the first Sandwich settlers in 1637. Thornton, Sr., died the same year his son was born, and the young Thornton, Jr. was brought up by his mother in Sandwich. They lived in humble circumstances. As a youth, he worked tending cows, picking trailing arbutus (mayflowers) or berries, shipping water lilies from local ponds, selling candy, and trapping muskrats. William C. Chipman, one of his employers, lived on Discovery Hill Road, a wildlife habitat of woodland and wetland. This habitat became the setting of many stories in which Burgess refers to Smiling Pool and the Old Briar Patch.
