- Résumé : "The Adventures of Old Mr. Toad" by Thornton W. Burgess is a charming tale that explores the life and hidden talents of Old Mr. Toad, a character often underestimated by his neighbors in the Green Meadows and the Smiling Pool. The story begins with Jimmy Skunk noticing Old Mr. Toad's unusual hurry to reach the Smiling Pool, claiming he has a beautiful voice and an important role in the spring chorus. Skeptical but curious, Jimmy, along with Peter Rabbit and Unc' Billy Possum, follows Old Mr. Toad to discover the truth. To their surprise, they find that Old Mr. Toad indeed has a melodious voice, contributing to the springtime symphony with his sweet song. As the narrative unfolds, Peter Rabbit learns more about Old Mr. Toad's life, including his specialized tongue, which is adept at catching insects, and his ability to change his skin. The story also delves into the lifecycle of toads, as Peter witnesses the metamorphosis of tadpoles into tiny toads, ready to explore the world. Through these adventures, Peter gains a newfound respect for Old Mr. Toad, realizing that appearances can be deceiving and that everyone has their own special talents. The tale is not just about the adventures of Old Mr. Toad but also serves as a gentle reminder of the importance of not judging others hastily and appreciating the hidden qualities in those around us. Burgess weaves a narrative that is both educational and entertaining, highlighting the wonders of nature and the value of every creature within it.
- Biographie : Born January 17, 1874 in Sandwich, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, Burgess was the son of Caroline F. Haywood and Thornton W. Burgess Sr., a direct descendant of Thomas Burgess, one of the first Sandwich settlers in 1637. Thornton, Sr., died the same year his son was born, and the young Thornton, Jr. was brought up by his mother in Sandwich. They lived in humble circumstances. As a youth, he worked tending cows, picking trailing arbutus (mayflowers) or berries, shipping water lilies from local ponds, selling candy, and trapping muskrats. William C. Chipman, one of his employers, lived on Discovery Hill Road, a wildlife habitat of woodland and wetland. This habitat became the setting of many stories in which Burgess refers to Smiling Pool and the Old Briar Patch.
