- Résumé : Pretty Brutal is an intimate and unfiltered art book that explores the intersection of tattooing, womanhood, sexuality, grief and rebellion through the eyes of a working tattoo artist. Blending photography, illustrations, tattoo flash, paintings and personal essays, the book documents life inside the tattoo world while reflecting on the emotional landscapes that exist beneath the surface of the work. From the quiet vulnerability of memorial tattoos to the darker undercurrents of addiction, sexuality and power within tattoo culture, Pretty Brutal reveals how tattooing becomes more than decoration. It becomes a language of survival, identity and memory. Through a series of raw and poetic chapters, the book explores the realities of living and working as a woman in a historically male dominated industry, the strange intimacy that exists between artist and client, and the ways in which pain, beauty and permanence often exist side by side. The stories move between deeply personal moments and wider reflections on art, bodies and culture. Moments of grief shared between strangers in a tattoo studio. The connection between tattooing and the psychology of pain. The unexpected ways body art can shape confidence, sexuality and self ownership. Alongside these reflections, Pretty Brutal presents a visual archive of tattoo designs, sketchbook pages, paintings and photography that capture the atmosphere of the studio, the bodies that carry the work and the creative process behind it. At its heart, Pretty Brutal is a portrait of a life lived through art. Honest, gritty and at times darkly humorous, it is a book about the beauty that can grow out of difficult experiences and the ways in which art can leave marks that go far deeper than skin. Pretty Brutal is both a visual journey through tattoo culture and a personal meditation on identity, resilience and the strange poetry that exists within pain.
- Biographie : My name is Meg Rees and I am a tattoo artist, illustrator and writer based in London. Tattooing has placed me inside thousands of human stories. Grief, rebellion, love, chaos and the strange beauty people choose to carry permanently on their skin. Pretty Brutal is a collection of those moments. A mix of tattoos, artwork, photography and writing that explores the darker, more honest side of tattoo culture and the emotional worlds that exist behind the ink.
