- Résumé : "Tom Jones" by Henry Fielding is a seminal work in English literature, often celebrated for its rich narrative and complex character development. The story begins with the discovery of a foundling, Tom Jones, in the bed of the benevolent and wealthy Mr. Allworthy. Despite the mystery surrounding his birth, Mr. Allworthy decides to raise Tom as his own, setting the stage for a tale that explores themes of virtue, morality, and social class. The novel is structured into several books, each detailing different phases of Tom's life, from his upbringing in the countryside to his adventures in London. Throughout the narrative, Fielding employs a satirical tone to critique the social norms and hypocrisies of 18th-century England. The characters are vividly drawn, with Tom portrayed as a good-hearted but impulsive young man, whose journey to maturity is fraught with challenges and misunderstandings. The novel also delves into the lives of other characters, such as the virtuous Sophia Western, who becomes Tom's love interest, and the scheming Blifil, who seeks to undermine Tom at every turn. Fielding's work is noteworthy for its narrative progression, blending elements of comedy, romance, and social commentary. The novel's exploration of human nature and its emphasis on the importance of personal integrity and compassion remain relevant, making "Tom Jones" a timeless classic.
- Biographie : Henry Fielding (22 April 1707 - 8 Octr 1754) was an English novelist, irony writer, and dramatist known for earthy humour and satire. His comic novel Tom Jones is still widely appreciated. He and Samuel Richardson are seen as founders of the traditional English novel. He also holds a place in the history of law enforcement, having used his authority as a magistrate to found the Bow Street Runners, London's first intermittently funded, full-time police force.
