- Résumé : "The Old Debauchees" is a comedic play by Henry Fielding that explores themes of hypocrisy, deception, and the conflict between personal desires and societal expectations. Set in Toulon, the play opens with Isabel, a young woman, expressing her disdain for the idea of joining a nunnery, a decision her father, Jourdain, is considering to atone for his past sins. Jourdain, plagued by guilt and fear of purgatory, is easily manipulated by Father Martin, a cunning priest who has ulterior motives for Isabel. Martin, under the guise of spiritual guidance, attempts to seduce Isabel, promising her divine favor and a future as the mother of a pope. Meanwhile, Old Laroon, a boisterous and irreverent character, is determined to see his son, Young Laroon, marry Isabel. He is outraged when he learns that Father Martin has delayed the marriage. Old Laroon's disdain for the clergy is evident as he mocks their influence and plots to expose Martin's hypocrisy. Young Laroon, disguised as a friar, attempts to manipulate Jourdain by claiming divine intervention, but the plan backfires, leading to a series of comedic misunderstandings. The play culminates in a scheme to entrap Father Martin, revealing his true intentions. Isabel, with the help of Young Laroon, orchestrates a scenario to expose Martin's lechery. The play ends with the characters confronting the absurdity of their situations, highlighting Fielding's critique of religious and social pretensions.
- Biographie : Henry Fielding (22 April 1707 - 8 Octr 1754) was an English novelist, irony writer, and dramatist known for earthy humour and satire. His comic novel Tom Jones is still widely appreciated. He and Samuel Richardson are seen as founders of the traditional English novel. He also holds a place in the history of law enforcement, having used his authority as a magistrate to found the Bow Street Runners, London's first intermittently funded, full-time police force.
