  • Résumé : "The Princess of the School" by Angela Brazil is a captivating narrative that intertwines the lives of schoolgirls with the complexities of family heritage. The story begins with the Ingleton family, particularly focusing on Lilias and Dulcie, who are students at Chilcombe Hall. The school, known for its beautiful surroundings and emphasis on the "beauty cult," provides a nurturing environment for its pupils. The narrative captures the excitement and camaraderie among the girls, especially during events like the Valentine party, where they engage in writing anonymous valentines and telling fortunes, showcasing their youthful innocence and creativity. The plot thickens as the Ingleton siblings return home for the holidays, where Everard, the eldest, assumes the role of the young squire, believing himself to be the heir to the family estate, Cheverley Chase. However, a chance encounter with the family solicitor, Mr. Bowden, hints at a hidden family secret involving their Uncle Tristram and a cousin named Leslie, potentially altering Everard's expectations of inheritance. The story takes a dramatic turn when Everard, in a bid to assert his independence, takes his siblings on an unauthorized joy-ride in their grandfather's car, leading to a series of misadventures. The car breaks down on a remote moor, forcing the siblings to seek shelter in a nearby town, which results in a stern reprimand from their grandfather. This incident, coupled with the revelation of a possible rival heir, sets the stage for a deeper exploration of family dynamics and the responsibilities that come with privilege. Angela Brazil's narrative is a blend of school life, family drama, and the journey of self-discovery, capturing the essence of early 20th-century youth and the societal expectations placed upon them.
