- Résumé : Such focus on the figure of the writer foregrounds literature’s own engagement with the problem of representation, particularly in the case of Francophone African and Caribbean narrative, where the writer is not simply the producer of a text but a figure who wrestles with questions of political agency, authorial legitimacy as well as the limits and consequences of literary representation. As such, the postcolonial writer confronts an epistemological problem as much as a representational one. In consequence, these works do not merely narrate events; they theorize, through narrative form itself, the conditions under which authorship becomes possible. Ultimately, the six novels here scrutinized do not produce a unified theory of authorship. Rather, what unites these texts is a sustained interrogation of the conditions under which writing can claim authority over experience. This newly-turned study explores the writer figure in six Francophone texts: Rachida Madani’s L’histoire peut attendre, Ousmane Sembène’s Le docker noir, Joseph Zobel’s La rue Cases-Nègres, Ferdinand Oyono’s Une vie de boy, Boubacar Boris Diop’s Murambi, le livre des ossements, and Patrick Chamoiseau’s Solibo Magnifique. Although these works emerge from different historical, geographical, and aesthetic contexts, each features a writer whose peregrinations within the novel brings theretofore unrecognized meanings to light. The metatextual dimension (writers who foreground writers in their works) serves to subtly expose the process by which authorship intersects with questions of power, historical memory, authorial agency and the struggle to create.
