Biographie : Né en 1783 dans une famille de commerçants, enfant épris d'école buissonnière, grand voyageur puis défenseur avant l'heure du droit d'auteur et de la protection de la propriété intellectuelle, créateur du nom de « Gotham City », Washington Irving, admiré par Lord Byron, fut, aux côtés de James Fenimore Cooper, le premier écrivain américain à succès. Il publie les Contes de l'Alhambra en 1832 - également publié chez Libretto - et c'est en 1836 qu'il fait paraître Astoria. Il est mort dans son lit en novembre 1859 à l'âge de soixante-seize ans.
