  • Résumé : "The Hill of Dreams" by Arthur Machen is a novel that delves into the life of Lucian Taylor, a young man who is caught between the allure of the mystical and the harsh realities of everyday life. The narrative begins with Lucian's exploration of a mysterious lane that leads him to a Roman fort, where he experiences a profound and transformative change. This experience leaves a lasting impression on him, symbolizing the tension between his imaginative aspirations and the mundane world. As Lucian grows, he becomes increasingly isolated, finding solace in books and the natural world around him. His father, a parson, shares his love for literature but is burdened by financial difficulties, which eventually force Lucian to leave school. Despite these challenges, Lucian continues to pursue his literary endeavors, writing and submitting his work to publishers, only to face rejection. The novel explores themes of artistic struggle, the conflict between dreams and reality, and the search for meaning in a world that often seems indifferent to individual aspirations. Machen's rich descriptions and exploration of the mystical elements of the landscape serve as a backdrop to Lucian's internal journey, making "The Hill of Dreams" a poignant reflection on the artist's life.
  • Biographie : Machen was born Arthur Llewelyn Jones in Caerleon, Monmouthshire. The house of his birth, opposite the Olde Bull Inn in The Square at Caerleon, is adjacent to the Priory Hotel and is today marked with a commemorative blue plaque. The beautiful landscape of Monmouthshire (which he usually referred to by the name of the medieval Welsh kingdom, Gwent), with its associations of Celtic, Roman, and medieval history, made a powerful impression on him, and his love of it is at the heart of many of his works.
