S'inspirant de la philosophie occulte des premiers Rose-Croix, des philosophes médiévaux et de l'étude de la mystique indienne et des religions orientales, Helena Petrovna Blavatski l'incita alors à rejoindre la société théosophique. Il en fut naturellement un des membres les plus éminents.
