In "The Ambitious Guest," a young traveler visits a family living in a remote mountain pass. As they share their dreams and aspirations, a sense of foreboding looms over them, symbolized by the precarious mountain above. The story explores the fleeting nature of life and the human desire for legacy and remembrance. Both tales delve into the complexities of human change and the search for meaning, set within the majestic yet indifferent natural world.
Biographie : Maître américain du « gothique provincial », Nathaniel Hawthorne est né à Salem, Massachusetts, en 1804. Il a connu la gloire avec La Lettre écarlate (1850). Suivront des chef-d'œuvres tels que La Maison aux sept pignons (1851), Valjoie (1852) ou encore Le Faune de marbre (1860). Il meurt en 1864 à Plymouth dans le New Hampshire.
