  • Résumé : "The Edge of the Knife" by H. Beam Piper explores the intriguing concept of precognition through the experiences of Edward Chalmers, a history professor at Blanley College. Chalmers possesses an unusual ability to foresee future events, a talent that becomes problematic when he inadvertently reveals the assassination of Khalid ib'n Hussein, a prominent Middle Eastern leader, before it occurs. This revelation, initially dismissed as a slip of the tongue, gains credibility when the event transpires exactly as Chalmers described. The story delves into the chaos that ensues as Chalmers grapples with the implications of his foresight, facing skepticism from his peers and the college administration. The narrative unfolds against a backdrop of political tension and impending conflict change, highlighting the precarious nature of knowledge and the ethical dilemmas associated with foreseeing the future. As Chalmers navigates the challenges posed by his predictive ability, he must contend with the pressures of academic scrutiny, media attention, and the potential transfer of his knowledge on world events. Piper's tale raises profound questions about the nature of time, the limits of human understanding, and the responsibilities that come with extraordinary insight.
  • Biographie : Piper was largely self-educated; he obtained his knowledge of science and history without subjecting myself to the ridiculous misery of four years in the uncomfortable confines of a raccoon coat. He went to work at age 18 as a laborer at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona yards in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He also worked as a night watchman for the railroad.
