- Résumé : "The Amazing Marriage" by George Meredith is a captivating narrative set in 19th-century England, weaving a complex tale of love, scandal, and societal norms. The story begins with the elopement of the beautiful Countess Fanny with the enigmatic Old Buccaneer, Captain Kirby. Their daring escape and subsequent marriage defy societal expectations, as Kirby, a seasoned adventurer, captivates the young countess with his tales of valor and resilience. The narrative unfolds through the eyes of Dame Gossip, who provides a vivid account of the events, characters, and the societal backdrop of the time. The plot thickens with the involvement of various noble families, including the Fakenhams and the Cressetts, whose lives intertwine with that of Countess Fanny and Kirby. The story explores themes of honor, reputation, and the constraints of societal expectations, as characters navigate the complexities of love and duty. The narrative also delves into the lives of the next generation, particularly focusing on Chillon and Carinthia, the children of Countess Fanny and Kirby, as they grapple with their heritage and the legacy of their parents' choices. Meredith's work is a rich tapestry of character studies, exploring the motivations and inner lives of individuals caught in the web of societal pressures and personal desires. The novel is a reflection on the nature of marriage, the pursuit of happiness, and the enduring power of love against the backdrop of a rigid social structure.
- Biographie : George Meredith OM (12 February 1828 - 18 May 1909) was an English novelist and poet of the Victorian era. At first his focus was poetry, influenced by John Keats among others, but he gradually established a reputation as a novelist. The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) briefly scandalised Victorian literary circles. Of his later novels, the most enduring is The Egoist (1879), though in his lifetime his greatest success was Diana of the Crossways (1885). His novels were innovative in their attention to characters' psychology, and also took a close interest in social change. His style, in both poetry and prose, was noted for its syntactic complexity; Oscar Wilde likened it to chaos illumined by brilliant flashes of lightning. He was an encourager of other novelists, as well as an influence on them; among those to benefit were Rrt Louis Stevenson and George Gissing. He was nominated for the Nl Prize in Literature seven times.
