  • Résumé : Texte à corriger : "Struggles and Triumphs" by P. T. Barnum is an autobiographical account detailing the early life and career of one of America's most famous showmen. Born in Bethel, Connecticut, in 1810, Barnum's childhood was marked by a keen sense of acquisitiveness and a penchant for trade, which he demonstrated through various small business ventures, such as selling molasses candy and other goods. His early experiences in business were a mix of successes and failures, providing him with valuable lessons in trade and negotiation. Barnum's first visit to New York City at the age of twelve was a formative experience, exposing him to the bustling metropolis and its opportunities, albeit with some humorous misadventures involving his spending habits. His early career included a stint as a clerk in a country store, where he honed his skills in bargaining and customer interaction. Barnum's narrative also touches on his family life, including the humorous tale of "Ivy Island," a piece of land he inherited that turned out to be worthless. Despite these humble beginnings, Barnum's story is one of perseverance and evolution, setting the stage for his later success as a showman and entrepreneur. His autobiography not only provides insight into his personal life and character but also serves as an inspiration for those facing adversity, illustrating how determination and creativity can lead to success.
  • Biographie : Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 - April 7, 1891) was an American showman, businessman, and politician, remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus (1871-2017) with James Anthony Bailey. He was also an author, publisher, and philanthropist, though he said of himself: I am a showman by profession ... and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me. According to his critics, his personal aim was to put money in his own coffers. He is widely credited with coining the adage There's a sucker born every minute, although no evidence has been collected of him saying this.
