Biographie : Lewis « Lew » Wallace (1827-1905) à Brookville dans l'Indiana, a exercé plusieurs professions : avocat, juriste, diplomate, général de l'Armée de l'Union lors de la guerre de Sécession, gouverneur du territoire du Nouveau-Mexique de 1878 à 1881. En 1881, il est nommé ambassadeur en Turquie. Il s'oppose au fameux bandit Billy the Kid dont il met la tête à prix. Passionné de littérature, il est également écrivain. Il est en effet célèbre pour son roman historique Ben-Hur, publié en 1880 et qui, en 1900, devient aux États-Unis le livre le plus vendu du XIXe siècle.
