On lui doit plusieurs récits célèbres, dont Le Stoïque Soldat de plomb, La Bergère et le Ramoneur, La Reine des neiges, La Princesse au petit pois, La Petite Fille aux allumettes, La Petite Sirène, ou Le Vilain Petit Canard.
