Despite being heavily armed and experienced, the robbers were met with unexpected resistance from the townspeople, including Joseph Lee Heywood, the acting cashier, who refused to open the bank's safe despite threats and violence. The citizens, armed with whatever weapons they could find, bravely defended their town, resulting in the death of two gang members and the retreat of the rest. Heywood's steadfastness cost him his life, but his actions, along with those of the townspeople, thwarted the robbery. The book serves as a tribute to Heywood's heroism and the collective courage of Northfield's citizens, emphasizing the triumph of integrity and community spirit over criminality.
