  • Résumé : "Our Old Home: A Series of English Sketches" by Nathaniel Hawthorne offers a vivid exploration of Anglo-American relations through the lens of his experiences as the United States Consul in Liverpool. The text delves into the myriad interactions Hawthorne had with American expatriates, travelers, and various other individuals during his tenure. He provides a detailed account of the challenges faced by American sailors, the peculiarities of American travelers, and the often humorous yet poignant encounters with individuals claiming ties to English estates. Hawthorne's narrative is rich with observations on the cultural contrasts between Americans and the English, highlighting the former's wanderlust and the latter's insular tendencies. The text also reflects on the broader implications of national identity and the enduring connections between the two nations, despite historical conflicts. Through personal anecdotes and reflections, Hawthorne paints a complex picture of the American character abroad, marked by both ingenuity and naivety. His role as Consul placed him in an intermediary position to witness the struggles and aspirations of his countrymen, offering insights into the American spirit and its reception in a foreign land. The sketches are not only a commentary on individual experiences but also a broader reflection on the cultural and political ties that bind the United States and England.
