- Biographie : William Butler Yeats est né à Dublin en 1865. Fils et frère de peintre, il fréquente très tôt un milieu d'artistes et d'intellectuels. Il abandonne ses études en 1886 pour se consacrer à l'écriture. Frappé par les oeuvres de Blake, de Shelley et Swedenborg, il se tourne vers la mystique et la philosophie. Il publie en 1889 son premier recueil. C'est aussi l'année de sa rencontre avec l'artiste et militante politique anglaise Maud Gonne, favorable à l'autodétermination irlandaise, qui sera la grande passion de sa vie. Il sillonne la campagne irlandaise pour recueillir les légendes populaires et travaille à Galway pour le renouveau du théâtre irlandais. Très vite il est internationalement reconnu, notamment aux États-Unis où il se rend plusieurs fois. Il est très impliqué dans la naissance de la République irlandaise. Il entreprend en 1917 il se lance dans la rénovation d'une tour médiévale, Thoor Ballylee, qui inspirera plusieurs de ses grands recueils. Il reçoit le prix Nobel en 1923. Le théâtre nô influence de plus en plus des oeuvres comme Les Quatre Pièces pour danseurs (1921). L'angoisse de la vieillesse se traduit par une multiplication des liaisons féminines et une écriture de plus en plus sensuelle. Il meurt dans un petit hôtel du sud de la France, à Roquebrune, le 28 janvier 1939.
