  • Résumé : In "My Lady Rotha: A Romance," the narrative unfolds in the small town of Heritzburg during the tumultuous period of the Thirty Years' War. The town, under the protection of the formidable Count Tilly, has remained largely untouched by the war's devastation. However, the death of Tilly and the victory of the Swedish King at Breitenfeld stir unrest and change the dynamics within the town. The protagonist, Martin Schwartz, serves the Countess Rotha, a strong-willed and independent ruler who values justice and the protection of her subjects above all. The story begins with Martin witnessing the plight of a wounded Bavarian soldier, Stephen Wort, and his daughter, who are Roman Catholics living in a predominantly Protestant town. The local innkeeper, Klink, and other townsfolk, spurred by the Burgomaster Hofman and the Minister Dietz, seek to expel the Worts due to their faith, threatening the peace of the town. Martin, moved by the vulnerability of the Worts, brings the matter to the attention of the Countess. Despite the pressure from the town's changes, Countess Rotha stands firm in her resolve to protect the Worts, emphasizing her duty to uphold the law and defend the defenseless. Her stance highlights the themes of justice, change, and the moral complexities faced by those in power. The narrative explores the tension between personal beliefs and public duty, as well as the impact of war on individual lives and communities.
