- Résumé : What secrets lie behind the charming facade of Lady Audley? In the heart of Victorian England, a time marked by strict social hierarchies and rapid industrial change, M. E. Braddon's "Lady Audley's Secret" unfolds a tale of mystery and deception. The novel transports readers to a world where appearances are deceiving, and the truth is a rare commodity. Lady Audley, with her beauty and grace, seems to have it all, yet beneath her polished exterior lies a hidden past that threatens to unravel her carefully constructed life. Set against the backdrop of a society obsessed with status and propriety, the narrative delves into themes of identity, class, and the lengths one might go to protect their secrets. As the story progresses, the tension mounts, revealing the darker side of change and the consequences of living a lie. The novel's intricate plot and vivid characterizations offer a glimpse into the psychological complexities of its protagonists, making it a compelling study of human nature. Through the lens of this Victorian thriller, readers are invited to question the nature of truth and the societal pressures that drive individuals to conceal their true selves. By weaving a tale of suspense and intrigue, "Lady Audley's Secret" provides a captivating exploration of the human psyche and the moral dilemmas faced by its characters. This book offers a journey into the depths of Victorian society, challenging readers to reflect on the timeless themes of truth, deception, and the pursuit of happiness.
- Biographie : Born in Soho, London, Mary Elizabeth Braddon was privately educated. Her mother Fanny separated from her father Henry because of his infidelities in 1840, when Mary was five. When Mary was ten years old, her brother Edward Braddon left for India and later Australia, where he became Premier of Tasmania. Mary worked as an actress for three years, when she was befriended by Clara and Adelaide Biddle. They were only playing minor roles, but Braddon was able to support herself and her mother. Adelaide noted that Braddon's interest in acting waned as she took up writing novels.
