- Résumé : "First Lensman" by E. E. Smith is a pivotal science fiction novel that explores the formation of the Galactic Patrol, a universal peacekeeping force. The narrative begins with a confrontation between the Arisians and the Eddorians, two ancient and powerful races. The Arisians, possessing advanced mental capabilities, foresee the necessity of a Galactic Patrol to counter the Eddorians' tyrannical changes. Virgil Samms, a key figure in the Solarian Patrol, is guided by the enigmatic Dr. Nels Bergenholm to visit Arisia, a mysterious planet that holds the key to the Patrol's future. On Arisia, Samms encounters Mentor, an Arisian entity, who provides him with the Lens, a powerful tool that ensures only the worthy can wield the authority of the Patrol. The Lens not only identifies its bearer but also facilitates telepathic communication needed for maintaining order across the galaxies. The novel delves into themes of power, responsibility, and the moral integrity required to wield such power. It sets the stage for the epic struggle between the forces of Civilization and the malevolent Eddorians, highlighting the importance of unity and vigilance in the face of cosmic threats.

They moved to Spokane, Washington, the winter after Edward Elmer was born, where Mr. Smith was working as a contractor in 1900. In 1902, the family moved to Seneaquoteen, near the Pend Oreille River, in Kootenai County, Idaho. He had four siblings, Rachel M. born September 1882, Daniel M. born January 1884, Mary Elizabeth born February 1886 (all of whom were born in Michigan), and Walter E. born July 1891 in Washington.
