- Résumé : "Desperate Remedies" by Thomas Hardy is a novel that intricately weaves a narrative of suspense, romance, and moral dilemmas. Set in the 19th century, the story follows the life of Cytherea Graye, a young woman who finds herself entangled in a web of secrets and manipulations. After the sudden death of her father, Cytherea and her brother Owen are left in financial distress. Cytherea takes a position as a lady's maid to Miss Aldclyffe, a woman with a mysterious past and hidden motives. As the plot unfolds, Cytherea becomes involved with two men: the charming but unscrupulous Aeneas Manston and the honorable architect Edward Springrove. The novel explores themes of love, betrayal, and the struggle for personal integrity amidst societal pressures. Hardy's narrative is marked by its detailed character development and the exploration of the consequences of desperate actions. The story is structured around a series of events that span several years, with each chapter delving deeper into the characters' lives and the secrets they harbor. Hardy's use of suspense and his portrayal of the complexities of human relationships make "Desperate Remedies" a compelling read that keeps the audience engaged until the very end.
- Biographie : Thomas Hardy OM (2 June 1840 - 11 January 1928) was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, including the poetry of William Wordsworth. He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain, such as those from his native South West England. While Hardy wrote poetry throughout his life and regarded himself primarily as a poet, his first collection was not published until 1898. Initially, he gained fame as the author of novels such as Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891), and Jude the Obscure (1895). During his lifetime, Hardy's poetry was acclaimed by younger poets (particularly the Georgians) who viewed him as a mentor. After his death his poems were lauded by Ezra Pound, W. H. Auden and Philip Larkin.
