Résumé : Border Ecologies and the Gaza Strip takes a single family farm as a prism through which to examine the effects of systemic violence, war, and occupation along the Gaza–Israel border. Malkit Shoshan draws on many years of research in collaboration with Amir Qudaih and his family to assemble a non-linear narrative of the daily realities of life in Gaza, comprising family stories, maps, land deeds, spatial analysis, WhatsApp messages, photographs, recipes, and more. Following the structure of a lexicon, disparate elements ranging in scale and materiality sit together, all registering the intertwining of everyday life with geopolitical histories and regimes of control. First presented at the 2021 Venice Biennale, where it was awarded the Silver Lion, the project initially halted and then expanded and deepened in the wake of 7 October 2023. In the intervening time the farm has been levelled by the IDF. The first part of this book has consequently become an archive, and the second, in which many of the same themes are revisited, questions how we can talk about Gaza’s present and future amidst genocide.
