An Employee Who's Too Honest

Paul-Édouard Prouvost offers an inside account of how he uncovered a system of international corruption—and why he decided to reveal everything.

He is neither a journalist nor an outside observer: he was at the heart of the system. As the head of risk and compliance at a multinational cybersecurity firm, he gradually uncovered corruption schemes deeply entrenched in international business practices: middlemen, bogus services, “marketing expenses,” shell companies, hidden funds, and questionable payments.

At first, he tried to change these practices from the inside. But he gradually realized that the abuses he was exposing were not isolated incidents: they were systemic. So he decided to speak out.

Under the framework established by the Sapin 2 Act, the facts he reported were forwarded to the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office. They led to an investigation that culminated in 2025 in a Judicial Agreement in the Public Interest (CJIP) and the company’s payment of a fine of 16 million euros.

But this book is also the story of the price paid for deciding to tell the truth. For Paul-Édouard Prouvost had barely entered the workforce when he began to grapple with the gap between his youthful ideals and the reality of the business world. How far can one adapt without betraying oneself? At what point does compromise become a betrayal? And what is left to do when remaining silent amounts to acceptance?

Through his own journey, the author recounts the gradual normalization of lies and the imperceptible erosion of convictions. Above all, he shows how systems ultimately shape those who participate in them: rarely through a single, major initial mistake, but through a succession of small sacrifices, each one seeming almost insignificant. Until the day when a choice must be made: to continue remaining silent or to reveal everything.

From Sarcelles to the skyscrapers of Singapore, from the Andean mountains to the pressures exerted by his superiors, each stage brings the author back to a promise he made at age twenty: to learn the rules so that one day he might know how to break them.

Paul-Edouard Prouvost is the director of La Coopérative BIO d’Ile-de-France, former CEO of Les Potagers de Marcoussis, and former head of risk and compliance at a multinational cybersecurity company. He is a whistleblower in a corruption case that led to a judicial settlement (JCIP) accompanied by a fine of 16 million euros.
