- Résumé : "A l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs" (translated to "In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower" in English) is the second volume of Marcel Proust's seven-part novel sequence "À la recherche du temps perdu" (translated as "In Search of Lost Time" or "Remembrance of Things Past"). It was originally published in 1919. The novel continues to explore the themes of memory, love, and society introduced in the first volume, "Du côté de chez Swann" ("Swann's Way"). In "A l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs," the narrator, often referred to as Marcel, continues his journey of self-discovery and reflection on the nature of love and desire. The title, which can be translated as "In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower," alludes to the narrator's infatuation with various young women he encounters. The novel introduces the character of Albertine, with whom the narrator becomes enamored. Marcel's experiences with Albertine and his interactions with other characters serve as a lens through which Proust explores the complexities of love, jealousy, and the passage of time. Throughout the novel, Proust's distinctive style of introspection and intricate prose is on full display. He delves deeply into the inner thoughts and perceptions of his characters, providing a rich and nuanced exploration of human psychology and the intricate social dynamics of the time. "A l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs" won the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 1919 and is considered one of the most significant works of modernist literature. It is celebrated for its profound exploration of memory and the intricacies of human relationships, making it a cornerstone of French literature and a classic of world literature.
- Biographie : Proust was born on 10 July 1871 at the home of his great-uncle in the Paris Borough of Auteuil (the south-western sector of the then-rustic 16th arrondissement), two months after the Treaty of Frankfurt formally ended the Franco-Prussian War. His birth took place at the very beginning of the French Third Republic, during the violence that surrounded the suppression of the Paris Commune, and his childhood corresponded with the consolidation of the Republic. Much of In Search of Lost Time concerns the vast changes, most particularly the decline of the aristocracy and the rise of the middle classes, that occurred in France during the fin de siècle.
