The book investigates the transmission of carm. II,1,50, within the complex manuscript tradition of Gregory’s Carmina . The introduction provides a thorough examination of the poem’s composition, genre, and literary features. It also offers a novel examination of the distinctive characteristics of the elegiac distich in Christian poetry. An extensive commentary compares carm. II,1,50 with various parallels from Gregory’s own poetry and from a broader literary tradition, encompassing both pagan and Christian sources. Key intertextual references are incorporated into the commentary and presented in an apparatus fontium . Furthermore, this volume includes two previously unedited Byzantine paraphrases, shedding light on the long-lasting appreciation for this work throughout the Byzantine millennium.
