Résumé : Plattenbau, Panelák, Wielka Płyta, Panelky, Panelház or Панельки: Prefabricated panel blocks go by different names around the former Eastern Bloc, but no matter where they were built, their goal was always the same: to provide homes for expanding city populations after World War II. Panelki by Zupagrafika allows readers to assemble a Soviet-era pre-cast block, panel by panel, while learning about the history of prefabricated construction systems commonly used behind the Iron Curtain. The first part of the book opens with an introduction to mass housing in the former Soviet Union and its satellites, illustrated with photographs and propaganda posters. The second part contains 164 cardboard panels to press out and build a 27-cm-high 3D block with easy-to-follow instructions. The panels feature detailed illustrations recreating the facades of post-war modernist housing units, which are home to millions of city dwellers to this day, showcasing some elements added by the tenants afterwards, including satellite dishes or graffiti.
Biographie : Zupagrafika sont David Navarro et Martyna Sobecka, un éditeur indépendant, auteur et studio de design graphique, créé en 2012 à Poznań, en Pologne, célébrant l'architecture moderniste, le design et la photographie d'une manière unique et ludique. Au cours de la dernière décennie, David et Martyna ont créé, illustré et publié des livres et des kits primés explorant l'architecture moderniste et brutaliste d'après-guerre de l'ancien bloc de l'Est et au-delà. Leurs publications ont présenté des contributions d'architectes et d'écrivains tels que: Norman Foster, John Grindrod, Barnabas Calder, Peter Chadwick, Christopher Beanland ou Florian Heilmeyer. Zupagrafika sont les auteurs et éditeurs de titres tels que: Blok Wschodni (2014), Brutal London (2015), Blokoshka (2016), Paris Brut (2016), Blokowice (2016), The Constructivist (2017), Brutal East (2017) , Modern East (2017), Hidden Cities (2018), ainsi que les livres Brutal London (2016, Prestel), Brutal Britain (2018), Eastern Blocks (2019), Panelki (2019).
