Biographie : Margaret Gilbert attended the University of Cambridge (Girton College) where she took a B.A. in classics and philosophy, and the University of Oxford (St. Anne’s College) where she took a B. Phil. in Philosophy. She later held research posts at two Oxford colleges and received her doctorate from Oxford for a thesis entitled "On Social Facts" (1978) that was the first extended treatment of the nature of social phenomena within contemporary analytic philosophy. Its theses were developed in dialogue with the sociologists Emile Durkheim, Georg Simmel and Max Weber. She has lectured widely in the United States, Europe, and Scandinavia, and has held visiting research and teaching positions at many universities including Princeton, U.C.L.A., Oxford, and King’s College, London.
